Harold Brighouse

Author Code: EHBR

Born: Jul. 26, 1882 - Eccles, Salford, England

Died: Jul. 25, 1958 - London, England

Educated at Manchester Grammar School, Brighouse left school when he was 17 and began working as a textile buyer. In 1908, he left his position in order to write and produced his first play, Lonesome Like, and followed in 1909 with The Doorway, his first play to be performed on the stage. Many of Brighouse's plays were performed at the Gaiety Theatre in Manchester. During the First World War he joined the precursor to the RAF and worked at the Air Ministry Intelligence Staff. It was during this period that he produced his most famous work, Hobson's Choice, which opened in New York and was later adapted for film in 1920 and later occasions, including TV versions. Brighouse did write some novels, but his primary output was for the stage. His works include Oak Settle (1911), Odd Man Out (1912), Graft (1913), The Game (1914), The Northeners (1914), Zack (1920), Once a Hero (1922), Wrong Shadow (1923), Little Liberty (1927), The Dye-Hard (1934), British Passport (1939), Man Who Ignored the War (1940), Sporting Rights (1943) and What I Have Had (1953).
