Born: Jan. 22, 1856 - Ashfield, Co. Cavan, Ireland

Died: Jun. 27, 1925 - Oxford, England

Educated at Balliol College, Oxford, Godley became a fellow and tutor at Magdalen College from 1883 to 1912. In 1883, he had become a contributor to Oxford Magazine and in 1890 became an editor. In 1892, he published Verses to Order a book of humorous poems. It was here he developed his reputation as a writer of humour and satire in verse as well as prose. During the First World War he served as a lieutenant-colonel in the Oxfordshire Volunteer Corps. Over the years Godley undertook many important translations, including Herodotus and the Odes of Horace. He was also a regular contributor to mainstream periodicals such as the Saturday Review. His works include Aspects of Modern Oxford (1894), Socrates, and Atheniun Society in His Age (1896), Lyra Frivola (1899), Second Strings (1902), Verses to Order - 2 (1904), Oxford in the Eighteenth Century (1908), The Casual Ward (1912) and Reliquivae (1926 Posthumous).
