Dornford Yates *

a.k.a. Cecil William Mercer

Author Code: ECWM

Born: Aug. 7, 1885 - Walmer, Kent, England

Died: Mar. 5, 1960 - Umtali, Southern Rhodesia

Educated at Harrow and University College, Oxford, Mercer received his law degree in 1904. While at school he became heavily involved in theatre dramatics and served as president of the Oxford University Dramatic Society in 1907. He was called to the bar in 1909 and worked as a lawyer for several years before becoming a full-time author. He contributed short stories to the leading magazines in his spare time. Mercer joined the County of London Yeomanry at the outbreak of the First World War and served in Egypt and Macedonia until 1917 when he was sent home due to severe muscular rheumatism. Eventually decommissioned in 1919, Mercer decided not to return to law. In 1922, he moved to France with his family. His first book, The Brother of Daphne (1914), contained a collection of short stories previously published in the Windsor Magazine between 1911 and 1914. Likewise, his second book, The Courts of Idleness (1920), was a collection of short stories. During the 1920's and 1930's Mercer, writing under the pseudonym of Dornford Yates, was one of Britain's favourite authors. He was divorced in 1933 and remarried in 1934 and the new couple lived in Pau in the South of France until 1940, when they fled the Nazi occupation to settle in Rhodesia. They returned to France at the end of the war, but soon returned to Rhodesia where they remained. Mercer wrote a variety of books, some thrillers and mysteries, some humour and included Berry & Co. (1921), Anthony Lyveden (1921), Valerie French (1923), The Stolen March (1926), Adele & Co. (1931), Storm Music (1934), She Fell Among Thieves (1935), Gale Warning (1939), The House That Berry Built (1945), Lower Than Vermin (1950), Ne'er-Do-Well (1954) and Wife Apparent (1958).
