Miles Franklin

a.k.a. Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin, Brent of Bin Bin *

Author Code: OSMF

Born: Oct. 14, 1879 - Talbingo, Australia

Died: Sep. 19, 1954 - Drummoyne, Australia

Educated at home until she was ten, Franklin then attended Thornford Public school. She was encouraged to write by her teachers who recognized her talent and she contributed some articles to local papers. In 1901, she published My Brilliant Career, which was a great success. She moved to America in 1906 and worked as a secretary for the National Women's Trade Union League in Chicago. There she edited the League's magazine. In 1915, she went to England where she worked as a cook. During the First World War she worked as a cook for the Scottish Women's Hospitals in Serbia and Greece. Following the war she again worked as a secretary for the National Housing and Town Planning Association in London and supplemented her income by journalism. She returned to Australia in 1932 and, for the next ten years, devoted her time to writing, publishing arguably her best novel, All That Swagger, in 1936. She was also active in the Feminist movement in Australia and did much to encourage female writers. She was offered an OBE in 1937, but declined it. Her other works include Some Everyday Folk and Dawn (1909), Up the Country (1928), Ten Creeks Run (1930), Old Blastus of Bandicoot (1931), Bring the Monkey (1933), My Career Goes Bung (1946), Prelude to Waking (1950), Cockatoos (1955 Posth.) and Laughter, Not for a Cage (1956 Posth.).
