Robert Seymour Bridges

a.k.a. Robert Bridges, Droch *

Author Code: ERSB

Born: Oct. 23, 1844 - Walmer, Kent, England

Died: Apr. 21, 1930 - Boars Hill, Oxford, England

Educated at Eton College and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, Bridges then studied medicine at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London. He held various medical positions before being forced to retire in 1882 due to ill health. He then devoted the remainder of his life to literary pursuits. He had already published his first book of poetry in 1873. Although he never achieved the fame of many of his contemporaries, Bridges poetry was praised by many of them. He brought the work of Gerald Manley Hopkins to the attention of the public with the posthumous publication of his works in 1918. In 1913, Bridges was appointed poet laureate and was one of the founders of the Society for Pure English. His works include Prometheus the Firegiver (1883), Nero (1885), Shorter Poems (1890), The Humours of the Court (1893), Keats (1895), Hymns From the Yattendon Hymnal (1899), Demeter: A Mask (1905), The Spirit of Man (1916), The Necessity of Poetry (1918), October and Other Poems (1920), The Tapestry: Poems (1925) and The Testament of Beauty (1929).
