Felix Blumenfeld

a.k.a. Felix Mikhailovich Blumenfeld

Author Code: RFXB

Born: Apr. 19, 1863 - Kovalevka, Ukraine

Died: Jan. 21, 1931 - Moscow, Russia

Educated at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, Blumenfeld studied composition under Rimsky-Korsakov. On completion of his studies, he remained at the Conservatory to teach piano, a position he continued to hold until 1918. From then until 1922, he was the director of the Music-Drama School of Lysenko in Kiev and had Vladimir Horowitz as one of his students. He returned to the Conservatory in 1922 and taught there until his death. Blumenfeld's piano works are of the highest quality and his Preludes Op. 17 are comparable to those of Chopin. He wrote one symphony, some chamber music and a large quantity of piano pieces. In addition to his closeness with Rimsky-Korsakov, Blumenfeld became lifelong friends with Scriabin and Rachmaninoff.
