Richmal Crompton

Died: Jan. 11, 1969 - London, England

Educated at St. Elphin's boarding school and Royal Holloway College, University of London, Compton received a BA honours degree in Classics in 1914. She returned to St. Elphin's to teach and in 1917 moved on to Bromley High School. At this time she began to write and in 1919 published her first William story. In 1923, she contracted polio and lost the use of her right leg. She was forced to give up teaching and began writing full-time. She was extremely prolific in spite of her infirmary and produced over 40 novels in addition to her William stories and plays. During the 1930's she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a masectomy. Undeterred, she continued to write until her death over thirty years later. Her works include Just William (1922), More William (1922), The Innermost Room(1923), Still William (1925), The House (1926), The Thorn Bush (1928), William the Rebel (1933), Caroline (1936), William Does His Bit (1941), Weatherly Parade (1944), The Ridleys (1947), William the Bold (1950), Four in Exile (1954) Blind Man's Bluff (1957) and The Inheritor (1960).
