Elizabeth Inchbald

Died: Aug. 1, 1821 - Kensington, London, England

Educated at home, Elizabeth went to London in 1772 to start a career as an actress. Later that year she married fellow Catholic and actor Joseph Inchbald. After his death in 1779, Inchbald continued her acting career for a number of years. She began writing plays and by the end of her career had produced over 20. She also wrote two novels and editorial and critical works. By 1790, her acting career had given way to a literary one. Her dramas were very successful and made her financially independent. her works have had a revival in the modern era. These include I'll Tell You What (1785), The Widow's Vow (1786), The Child of Nature (1788), The Married Man (1789), A Simple Story (1791), Next Door Neighbours (1791), The Wedding Day (1794), Nature and Art (1794), Lover's Vows (1798) and The Wise Man of the East (1799).
