Rudolf Besier

a.k.a. Rudolf Wilhelm Besier

Author Code: ERBS

Born: Jul. 2, 1878 - Java, Dutch East Indies

Died: Jun. 16, 1942 - Surrey, England

Coming to England from the Dutch East Indies, Besier began producing plays and had his first success in 1906 with The Virgin Goddess. Over the next few years he produced a number of moderately successful plays, but it wasn't until 1930 when he produced The Barretts of Wimpole Street, that he achieved true success. Initially rejected by many producers, it was a major hit when it was finally produced. It resulted in a major film in 1934 starring Norma Shearer, Charles Laughton and Frederic March. Another film and a musical followed in later years. During his career, he also did some collaborative work, first with H.G. Wells in 1912 in converting Kipps for the stage and later with Hugh Walpole and May Edgington. His other works include Don (1908), Olive Latimer's Husband (1909), The Foolish Virgin (1910), Lady Patricia (1911), Her Country (1918), A Lesson in Love and Prude's Fall (1924).
