Epicurus

Author Code: CEPC

Born: Feb. 4, 341 BC - Samos, Greece

Died: (?) 270 BC - Athens, Greece

Educated in philosophy under Pamphilus, Epicurus then entered military service for two years. Following this he then studied under Nausiphanes. Around 310 BC, he returned to Athens and founded 'The Garden', a school of philosophy and the first to admit women students. Epicurus is a central figure in the development of scientific method. He was described by Diogenes Laertius as a most prolific writer and was able to preserve some of Epicurus' works; The Principal Doctrines being among them. Epicurus believed that the basic constituents of the world are atoms, moving in the void. While he believed in the existence of gods, he did not believe that they influenced nor affected men's lives. Some of his surviving letters explain his ethics, metaphysics and explanations for meteorlogical phenomenon.
