George Bird Grinnell

Author Code: AGBG

Born: Sep. 20, 1849 - Brooklyn, New York, USA

Died: Apr. 11, 1938 - New York City, New York, USA

Educated at Yale University, Grinnell received his BA in 1870. Later that year he participated in a paleontology expedition along the route of the Union Pacific Railroad. During this time he developed his life-long interest in the wildlife and Indian tribes of the West. He became an assistant in osteology at the Peabody Museum and in 1874 was invited to take part in Custer's expedition to the Black Hills. The following year he accompanied Colonel Ludlow's trip to Yellowstone. His experience there convinced him of the threat to wildlife. In 1876, he became the editor of Forest and Stream magazine (later merged with Field and Stream in 1930) and subsequently rose to senior editor and publisher. In 1886, he founded the Audubon Society of New York, serving as its director for 26 years. Grinnell's passion for controlling the destruction of wildlife was instrumental in generating legislation such as the Federal Migratory Bird Law. In 1887, he helped to found the Boone and Crockett Club and from 1918 to 1927 was its president. In 1893, he helped in investigating poaching in Yellowstone Park which led to the Yellowstone Park Protection Act in 1894. In 1921, he was awarded an honorary LittD degree from Yale. He also received the Theodore Roosevelt Gold Medal in 1925 for his contribution to conservation. His many written works include Blackfoot Lodge Tales (1892), American Big Game Hunting (1893), American Duck Shooting (1901), Indians of Today (1911), Trails of the Pathfinders (1911), Blackfeet Indian Stories (1913), Wolf Hunters (1914), When Buffalo Ran (1920), The Cheyenne Indians:Their History and Ways of Life (1923), By Cheyenne Campfires (1926) and Audubon Park (1927).
