Constance Fenimore Woolson

a.k.a. Anne March *

Author Code: ACFW

Born: Mar. 5, 1840 - Claremont, New Hampshire, USA

Died: Jan. 24, 1894 - Venice, Italy

Named after her mother's uncle, James Fenimore Cooper, Woolson moved to Ohio as an infant after three of her sisters died during a scarlet fever epidemic. She was educated at the Cleveland Female Seminary and subsequently at a fashionable New York boarding school. Throughout her youth Woolson traveled, often accompanying her father on business trips in the Midwest. The Civil War had a great impact on Woolson and resulted in many of her works being set in the Reconstruction South. Following her father's death in 1869, she began to publish stories and was a regular contributor to literary magazines such as Scribner's, Harper's and Atlantic Monthly. Her work won critical acclaim and she was very successful. After her mother's doctor recommended a warmer climate, the family relocated to Saint Augustine in Florida in 1873. In 1875, Woolson published her first collection of short stories, Castle Nowhere: Lake Country Sketches, which became very popular. After her mother's death in 1879, she moved to England and then spent some time in France before settling in Italy where she met Henry James. The two became lifelong friends. Woolson continued to contribute to American journals and in 1882, published Anne, the first of four novels that she would publish. Woolson was becoming progressively deaf and often suffered from severe depression. In 1894, evidently in a moment of such depression and suffering from influenza, she is said to have jumped from her hotel window and subsequently died from her injuries. Her other works include Rodman the Keeper: Southern Sketches (1880), East Angels (1886), Jupiter Lights (1889), Horace Chase (1894), The Front Yard and Other Italian Stories (1895 Posth.), Dorothy and Other Italian Stories (1896 Posth.) and Mentone, Cairo and Corfu (1896 Posth.)
