Carl Ewald

Author Code: NCEW

Born: Oct. 15, 1856 - Gram, Slesvig, Denmark

Died: Feb. 23, 1908 - Copenhagen, Denmark

The son of novelist H. F. Ewald, his family left Slesvig and moved to Elsinore in 1864 in order to get away from German rule. Carl was educated at Fredericksborg Gymnasium and began working as a journalist for a local Svendborg newspaper before moving to Copenhagen in 1880. There he worked as a freelance journalist, contributing to Politiken among others. He produced a series of novels critical of Danish society's hypocrisy and corruption, quickly making a name for himself. Taking over the legacy of Hans Christian Andersen, Ewald published a number of volumes of fairy tales during the 1890's that were fantastically popular. He went on to publish another 20 volumes and some translations, including the tales of the brothers Grimm. Today he is considered second only to H.C. Andersen in Denmark in the realm of fairy tales. His many works include In the Open (1892), Five New Fairy Tales (1894), The Four Little Princes (1896), My Little Boy (1899), The Old Willow-Tree and Other Stories (1907), The Spider and Other Tales (1907), The Queen Bee and Other Nature Stories (1908), The Old Room (1908), The Four Seasons (1913 Posthumous) and The Pond (1922 Posthumous).
