Augusta Groner

Died: Mar. 7, 1929 - Vienna, Austria

Groner worked as a primary school teacher beginning in 1876. In 1879, she married Richard Groner, a Journalist. She began her writing career around 1882 and published some poetry and children's stories before turning to crime fiction. She invented the Austrian detective Joseph Muller, who appeared in many of her works and who was the first "series" detective in German literature. She was honored by the literary department of the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. Many of her novels were translated into English. Her works include The Golden Ball (1892), As I Was Murdered (1893), The Old Gentleman (1898), The House in the Shade (1902), The Blue Lady (1905), The Black Chord (1908), The Red Mercury (1910), The Pentacle (1916) and The Wandering Light (1924).
