J. G. Frazer

Died: May 7, 1941 - Cambridge, England

Educated at the University of Glasgow and Trinity College, Cambridge, Frazer graduated with honours in Classics from Trinity. Apart from 1907-08 when he lectured at the University of Liverpool, Frazer's career was tied to Trinity. In 1890, he published The Golden Bough, an extensive work on magic and religion which is undoubtedly his greatest work. The book was extremely popular and ran to numerous editions. Some of Frazer's theories have since been rejected, but the book is nevertheless still used and widely read today. He was a fellow if the Royal Society and was knighted in 1914. His other works include Totemism (1887), Psyche's Task (1909), Totemism and Exogamy (1910), Folklore in the Old Testament (1918), The Worship of Nature (1926), Man, God and Immortality (1927), The Gorgon's Head and Other Literary Pieces (1927), Devil's Advocate (1928), The Growth of Plato's Ideal Theory (1930), Garnered Sheaves (1931), The Fear of the Dead in Primitive Religion (1933-36) and Creation and Evolution in Primitive Cosmogenies and Other Pieces (1935).
