George Sterling

Author Code: AGSG

Born: Dec. 1, 1869 - Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York, USA

Died: Nov. 17, 1926 - San Francisco, California, USA

Because of his father's desire for George to become a priest, he was educated at St. Charles College in Maryland. Nevertheless, his English professor, himself an unpublished poet, convinced Sterling that he had literary talent. In 1890, he moved to Oakland, California and became a real estate broker. It wasn't until 1907 that Sterling began his literary career in earnest. He joined the Bohemian Club, both a club and theatrical group, and did some acting in addition to providing verse dramas. In late 1907, he published A Wine of Wizardry, a poem which received national recognition through its appearance in Cosmopolitan magazine and was considered by Ambrose Bierce to be the greatest poem ever produced by an American author. Sterling would later refer to Bierce as the 'Master'. He became close friends with Jack London and other California literati and helped in the development of the artist's colony at Carmel. Many authors moved to Carmel, including Mary Austin, who would later write about Sterling. Sterling would himself become a mentor of such writers as Robinson Jeffers and Clark Ashton Smith. In addition to his many volumes of poetry,Sterling also produced short stories and some criticism. Depressed by illness that kept him from attending a dinner for H. L. Mencken, Sterling swallowed cyanide from a vial he had carried for years. Today he is considered by many to be one of America's premier poets. His other works include The Testimony of the Suns and Other Poems (1903), The Hours of Orchids and Other Poems (1911), The Caged Eagle and Other Poems (1916), Thirty-Five Sonnets (1917), Lilith: A Dramatic Poem (1919), Rosamund: A Dramatic Poem (1920), Sails and Mirage and Other Poems (1921), Truth: A Dramatic Poem (1923) and Strange Waters (1926).
