Charles Warren Stoddard

Born: Aug. 7, 1843 - Rochester, New York, USA

Died: Apr. 23, 1909 - Monterrey, California, USA

Stoddard's family moved to California when he was 12, but he returned to New York and lived with his grandparents for two years before returning to San Francisco. He began writing verse when still in his teens and had some success in publishing his poems in local newspapers. In 1864, he visited the South Sea islands and was inspired to produce his Idylls, which became very popular. He made further visits and met and befriended Father Damien on Molokai, well-known for his work with lepers. He converted to Catholicism in 1867. In 1873, he began a five-year tour of Europe and the Middle East as a special correspondent for the San Francisco Chronicle. In 1880 he joined the Overland Monthly as a co-editor with Bret Harte and Ina Coolbrith. In 1885, he became a professor of English literature at Notre Dame University, but it is said he left after a short time because of ill-health. he then took a similar position at the Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He left in 1902 and moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, but his health was deteriorating and he returned to California and settled in Monterrey in 1905.During his long career Stoddard was acquainted with most of the major American literary figures of the day, including Mark Twain, Bret Harte, Herman Melville, Walt Whitman, George Sterling, to name a few. His other works include Poems (1866), Summer Cruising in the South Seas (1874), Marshallah: A Flight to Egypt (1885), A Trip to Hawaii (1885), A Troubled Heart (1885), Wonder-Worker of Padua (1896), In the Footprints of the Padres (1902), Exits and Entrances (1903), For the Pleasure of His Company (1903) and The Island of Tranquil Delights (1904).
