John O'Keeffe

Born: Jun. 24, 1747 - Dublin, Ireland

Died: Feb. 4, 1833 - Southampton, England

Educated at a local Jesuit school, O'Keeffe began studying art at a Dublin Academy and became an accomplished artist before developing an interest in the theatre. In 1767, he produced his first play, The She Gallant, which was performed in Dublin. In 1777, he moved to London and over the next 20 years produced around 28 plays a became a regular producer at the Haymarket Theatre. His previous training in art was also used in designing sets for his plays. Having suffered from eye problems since his youth, O'Keeffe's eyesight began to deteriorate until around 1796 when he went totally blind. During his playwright years, O'Keeffe was extremely successful and his comic plays are still performed today. In 1826, he was awarded a state pension by George IV. His other works include The Giant's Causeway (1770), Tony Lumpkin in Town (1778), The Banditti (1783), Fontainbleau (1784), Omai(1785), Wild Oats (1791), The Wicklow Mountains (1795) andRecollections of the Life of John O'Keeffe (1826).
