Eliphas Levi *

a.k.a. Alphonse Louis Constant

Author Code: FALC

Born: Feb. 8, 1810 - Paris, France

Died: May 31, 1875 - Paris, France

Educated at the seminary of Saint Sulpice in Paris, where he studied for the priesthood, Levi had a romantic affair and left the seminary without being ordained. He began writing works of a religious nature and adopted the pseudonym of Eliphas Levi, an attempt to make his name sound Jewish. In 1841 he was sentenced to eight months in prison for publishing a socialist pamphlet entitled La Bible de la Liberte. He began to develop a strong interest in the occult. In 1853, he went to England where he met and became friends with Edward Bulwer-Lytton, a confirmed Rosicrucian. Levi published his first work in magic, Dogme de la Haute Magie, in 1855, which was very successful. Levi was very prolific during the 1860's and his work was very influential in the spiritual world, e.g. the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Levi's work includes Of the Moral Customs and Doctrines of Rationalism in France (1839), The Gospel of the People (1840), Ritual de la Haute Magie (1857), Historie de la Magie (1860), The Key to the Great Mysteries (1861), Stories and Images (1862), The Witch of Meudon (1865), The Science of Spirits (1865) and The Great Secret, or Occultism Unveiled (1898 Posthumous).
