Augustine Birrell

Author Code: EABR

Born: Jan. 19, 1850 - Wavertree, Nr. Liverpool, England

Died: Nov. 20, 1933 - London, England

Educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge where he studied law, Birrell was called to the bar in 1875 and for the remainder of his life, was involved in law and politics. He was elected to parliament as a Liberal in 1889, became a KC in 1893 and from 1896 to 1899 was professor of comparative law at University College, London. He served in the cabinet of Campbell-Bannerman as President of the Board of Education and in 1907 became Chief Secretary for Ireland. In 1884, he had published his first book, Obiter Dicta, a collection of essays that was well-received. Birrell resigned from political office following the Easter Rising in Ireland and did not defend his seat in the 1918 general election. Birrell's writing career was woven around his political one, so his output is not as great as it could have been. nevertheless, he produced some excellent, and often humorous, volumes of essays which included Life of Charlotte Bronte (1887),Res Judicatae (1892), Seven Lectures on the Law and History of Copyright in Books (1899), Miscellanies (1901), William Hazlitt (1902), Andrew Marvell (1905), In the Name of the Bodleian and Other Essays (1906), Self-Selected Essays (1917), More Obiter Dicta (1924) and Things Past Redress (1937 Posthumous).
