Wallace Stevens

Author Code: AWST

Born: Oct. 2, 1879 - Reading, Pennsylvania, USA

Died: Aug. 2, 1955 - Hartford, Connecticut, USA

Educated at Harvard University and the New York Law School, Stevens graduated in 1903 and was admitted to the bar the following year. He practiced law in New York City for over ten years. In 1914, he published his first poems, Phases in Poetry magazine. In 1916, he moved to Connecticut and began working for the Hartford Accident and Indemnity Co., eventually becoming its vice-president in 1934. Combining two very different careers, Stevens published his first book of poems, Harmonium, in 1923, but it wasn't until the 1930's that his production increased. Today he is considered one of the most important poets of the Modernist school and a major American poet of the 20th century. His works include Three Travelers Watch the Sunrise (1916), Carlos Among the Candles (1917), Ideas of Order (1935), Owl's Clover (1936), The Man With the Blue Guitar (1937), Parts of a World (1942), Transport to Summer (1947), Auroras of Autumn (1950) and Collected Poems (1954).
