James Blish

a.k.a. James Benjamin Blish

Born: May 23, 1921 - East Orange, New Jersey, USA

Died: Jul. 30, 1975 - Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, England

Educated at Rutgers University and Columbia University, Blish studied microbiology and trained as a biologist. He was drafted in 1942 in the U.S. Army and worked as a medical technician until his discharge in 1944. Following the war, he joined Pfizer Corporation as a science editor and began producing science fiction short stories. Although he had published his first story in 1940, it wasn't until the 1950's that his writing career blossomed. He published a series of novels which formed Cities in Flight (1970) beginning in 1950; they were Earthman, Come Home (1950), They Shall Have Stars (1952), The Triumph of Time (1958) and A Life for the Stars (1962). Over the years Blish was a contributor to SF magazines such as Astounding Science Fiction and Galaxy Science Fiction. beginning in the 1960's, Blish devoted most of his time in producing a dozen volumes of Star Trek books, based on the original TV scripts. In 1968, he emigrated to England to be close to Oxford and his intellectual pursuits. His manuscripts have been left to the Bodleian Library there. His many works include Emergency Refueling (1940), Beanstalk (1952), Common Time (1953), Beep (1954), A Work of Art (1956), The Frozen Years (1957), The Black Easter (1968), The Day After Judgment (1971) and Midsummer Century (1972).
