Karl Emil Franzos

Born: Oct. 25, 1848 - Czortkow, Galicia

Died: Jan. 28, 1904 - Berlin, Germany

Although born in what is the Ukraine today, Franzos was a staunch German who fervently backed the formation of the German nation. Educated at the University of Vienna and the University of Graz where he studied law, Franzos was more interested in writing. He traveled extensively in Eastern Europe and Russia and in 1876 published From Half-Asia, which used many of his experiences from the East and which became very popular. The following year, he published the equally popular The Jews of Barnow, a collection of short stories depicting Jewish life in the Eastern provinces. In 1884, he became the editor of the Neue Illustrierte Zeitung. In 1887, he settled in Berlin and founded the literary journal Deutsche Dichtung (German Poetry). In 1895, he established the Concordia publishing house. Franzos continued to write until his death and his many works include From the Don to the Donau (1878), Moshko of the Parma Regiment (1880),A Struggle for Justice (1882), From the Great Plains (1888), Judith Trachtenberg (1891), The Clown (1893), Christmas Cake and His Child (1896) and Der Wahreitsucher (1904).
