Jacques Futrelle

Born: Apr. 9, 1875 - Pike County, Georgia, USA

Died: Apr. 15, 1912 - Titanic, North Atlantic

The son of a college teacher, Futrelle was educated in public schools and at home by his father. he entered journalism working for the Atlanta Journal and was responsible for introducing their sports column. In 1895, he married and moved to New York where he began working for the New York Herald. He covered the Spanish-American War as a war correspondent for the Herald. In 1904, he joined the Boston American and had a number of short stories published. It was also at this time that he created Professor Augustus S.F.X. Van Dusen, an eccentric scientist and crime solver; a character who would appear in many of Futrelle's works. In 1906, he decided to become a full-time author and left the newspaper. For the next six years he was very successful, but unfortunately lost his life returning from Europe with his wife on the Titanic. His wife survived because he insisted she take a place in a lifeboat. His works include The Chase of the Golden Plate (1906), The Thinking Machine (1907), The Simple Case of Susan (1908), The Thinking Machine on the Case (1909), The High Hand (1910), My Lady's Garter (1912) and Blind Man's Bluff (1914 Posthumous).
