Max Pemberton

Died: Feb. 22, 1950 - London, England

Educated at Merchant Taylors' School and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, Pemberton graduated in 1884 and began working as a journalist. From 1892 to 1893, he edited Chums magazine. He then published The Iron Pirate which became a best-seller and launched his literary career. In 1896, he became the editor of Cassel's Magazine, a position he held until 1906. Over the ensuing years, Pemberton concentrated on his novels, producing many highly popular works. In 1920, together with Lord Northcliffe, he founded the London School of Journalism. He was knighted later that year. His other works include Impregnable City (1895), Queen of the Jesters (1897), The Garden of Swords (1899), The Show Girl (1909), Captain Blood (1911), Black Iron (1911), The Mad King Dies (1928) and Sixty Years Ago and After (1936).
