Osbert Sitwell

a.k.a. Sir Francis Osbert Sacheverell Sitwell, 5th Baronet

Author Code: EOSS

Born: Dec. 6, 1892 - London, England

Died: May 4, 1969 - Montegufoni, Florence, Italy

From an aristocratic family, Sitwell was educated at Eton College, graduating in 1909. He then spent two years at a military academy before joining the Sherwood Rangers and subsequently the Grenadier Guards. In 1914, he saw action at Ypres on the Western Front. He began to write poetry at this time, publishing Babel in The Times in 1916. That same year he founded the annual Wheels with his sister Edith and Brother Sacheverell, a modernist journal that ran until 1921. He left the army in 1918 and began a literary career that would span 50 years. He published his first book, Argonaut and Juggernaut in 1919. His first work of fiction, Triple Fugue, appeared in 1924. Sitwell was a gifted essayist and short story writer in addition to his excellent criticism and literary analysis. In 1943, he succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father Sir George Raresby Sitwell. His best work was undoubtedly his five-volume autobiography starting with Left Hand, Right Hand, which won critical acclaim. Over the years, Sitwell supported and befriended many literary greats including Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot and Aldous Huxley. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and in 1956 was awarded a COBE and was named Companion of Honour in 1958. His other works include Discussions on Travel, Art and Life (1925), Before the Bombardment (1926), All At Sea (1928), Dumb Animals and Other Stories (1930), Miracle on Sinai (1934), Scarlet Tree (1946), Great Morning (1947), Death of a God and Other Stories (1949), Noble Essences (1950), Four Continents (1954), Tales My Father Taught Me (1962) and Pound Wise (1963).
