James De Mille

Born: Aug. 23, 1833 - Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada

Died: Jan 28, 1880 - Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Educated at Horton Academy, Acadia University and, with a short break for travel to Europe, Brown University, De Mille received his Master's degree in 1854. He was then appointed professor of classics at Acadia, where he met and married Anne Pryor, daughter of Acadia's president. In 1865, he moved to Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia as a professor of English and rhetoric. in addition to his professorial duties, De Mille was an active author of fictional works and became one of the late 19th century's favorite authors in North America. His first book, Martyrs of the Catacombs, was published in 1864. During this time his novels began being serialized in American magazines. He also wrote a number of books aimed at younger readers. His works include Helena's Household (1867), The Dodge Club (1869), The Lady of the Ice (1870), Minnehaha's Mines (1870), Fire in the Woods (1871), An Open Question (1873), The Early English Church (1877), The Elements of Rhetoric (1878), A Strange Manuscript Found in a Copper Cylinder (1889 Posthumous) and Behind the Veil (1893 Posthumous).
