Joseph Jastrow

Born: Jan. 30, 1863 - Warsaw, Poland

Died: Jan. 8, 1944 - Stockbridge, Massachusetts, USA

The son of a noted Hebrew scholar, Jastrow's family immigrated to the United States when he was 3 years old and settled in Philadelphia. Jastrow was educated at Rugby Academy, the University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University. In 1888, he began teaching at the University of Wisconsin, a relationship that would last until his retirement in 1933.At the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893, Jastrow was head of the psychological section and exhibition. In 1927, he joined the New School for Social Research and from 1928 to 1932 edited Keeping Mentally Fit a syndicated newspaper column which helped to popularize psychology with the general public. In 1900, he served as president of the American Psychological Association. Jastrow is responsible for the introduction of the publishing of 'minor studies' in journals, which was subsequently adopted by all of the leading educational institutions. He also introduced a number of psychological illusions, the most famous of which is the 'rabbit/duck' illusion. His works include Time Relations of Mental Phenomena (1890), Epitomes of Three Sciences (1890), Fact and Fable in Psychology (1900), The Subconscious (1906), The Qualities of Men (1910), Character and Temperament (1914), The Psychology of Conviction (1918), The House That Freud Built (1932), Wish and Wisdom (1935) and Story of Human Error (1936).
