Walter R. Cassels

a.k.a. Walter Richard Cassels

Author Code: EWRC

Born: Sep. 4, 1826 - London, England

Died: Jun. 10, 1907 - London, England

The son of a British consular official, Cassels spent much of his early life in India. In 1850, he published Eidolon, the first of two volumes of poetry that he produced whilst in India. He joined with his two brothers in a partnership at Bombay and in 1862, published Cotton: An Account of its Culture in the Bombay Presidency and from 1863 to 1865 was an active member of the Bombay legislative council. He returned to England and took up residency in London. In 1874, two volumes entitled Supernatural Religion: An Inquiry Into the Reality of Divine Revelation, were published anonymously and caused a widespread scandal at the time. It wasn't until much later, 1895 in fact, that Cassels admitted authorship. The controversy continued until Cassels's death in 1907. in addition to his literary pursuits, Cassels was a connoisseur of fine art and acquired a fine collection of works including Turners and Romneys. His other works include A Reply to Dr. Lightfoot's Essays (1889) and The Gospel According to Peter: A Study (1894).
