Roland Pertwee

Died: Apr. 26, 1963 - London, England

Having spent a number of years in the British army, Pertwee retired following World War I and began pursuing his writing career. Initially involved in the film industry, Pertwee produced scripts and sometimes acted (he was Leslie Howard's father in the 1941 Pimpernel Smith). Over the years he became one of Britain's most prolific playwrights. He was the father of actor Jon and playwright Michael. In 1954, he collaborated with his son Michael in creating the first British television soap opera, The Grove Family, which ran until 1957. His other works include I Serve (1922), The Creaking Chair (1924), Hell's Loose (1929), Heat Wave (1929), A Prince of Romance (1932), Master of None (1938), Pink String and Sealing Wax (1943), School for Spinsters (1947), House on the Sand (1948), The Islanders (1950), Rough Water (1951) and The Story of Willie Syme (1957).
