Hans Driesch

a.k.a. Hans Adolf Eduard Driesch

Author Code: GHAD

Born: Oct. 28, 1867 - Bad Kreuznach, Germany

Died: Apr. 16, 1941 - Leipzig, Germany

Educated in medicine at the University of Freiberg and the University of Jena, Driesch also studied physics and chemistry at the University of Munich and received his PhD in 1889. He took a position at the Naples Marine Biological Station in 1891 where, over the next decade, he carried out experiments in embryology which disproved the earlier results of Weismann and Roux regarding cell division and embryonic development. Driesch also formulated his concept of entelechy which postulated that the origin of life lies outside biochemical and physiological influences and thus proposed the 'vital spark' concept of a self-determining force which would eventually lead to the field of genetics. In his later years, he became interested in the paranormal and psychical, undertaking numerous experiments in this field. He held professorships at Heidelberg, Cologne and Leipzig and was a visiting professor in China, America and South America. His works include The Localization of Morphogenetic Processes (1894), The Science and the Philosophy of the Organism (1908), The Theory of Order (1912), The Problem of Individuality (1914), Metaphysics (1924), Crisis in Psychology (1925), Mind and Body (1927), Man and the Universe (1929) and Psychical Research (1933).
