Elizabeth Bowen

a.k.a. Elizabeth Dorothea Cole Bowen

Author Code: IEBO

Born: Jun. 7, 1899 - Dublin, Ireland

Died: Feb. 22, 1973 - London, England

After her father had been diagnosed with mental illness in 1907, Bowen and her mother moved to London where she was subsequently educated at Downe House School. After her mother's death in 1912, she was raised by her aunts. Although she attended art school for a short time, writing was her true passion and with the help of Rose Macaulay who found her a publisher, Bowen published Encounters in 1923. The book, which was a collection of short stories, was very well-received, although Bowen herself was critical of the work. That year she also married Alan Cameron and, although the couple stayed together for almost thirty years, Bowen had numerous affairs, with one lasting over thirty years. As a writer Bowen would be classed as a modernist with a fine prose style. In 1925, they moved to Oxford where Bowen became friends with many literary figures and where she produced her first four novels. The couple returned to London in 1935 and Bowen became friends with many of the Bloomsbury group, including Virginia Woolf. During the war she served as an air raid warden and wrote about Ireland for the Ministry of Information. Following her husband's death in 1952, she returned to Ireland for eight years before once again moving to Oxford where she produced her final novel, Eva Trout, or Changing Scenes, in 1968. Bowen also produced a number of volumes of short stories and many non-fiction works. Other works include The Hotel (1927), The Last September (1928), Friends and Relations (1931), To the North (1932), The Cat Jumps and Other Stories (1934), The House in Paris (1935), The Death of the Heart (1938), Seven Winters (1942), The Heat of the Day (1949), A World of Love (1955), A Time in Rome (1960), The Little Girls (1964) and A Day in the Dark and Other Stories (1965).
