Maxwell Bodenheim

Author Code: AMXB

Born: May 26, 1892 - Hermanville, Mississippi, USA

Died: Feb. 6, 1954 - New York City, New York, USA

Bodenheim's family moved from Mississippi to Chicago when he was eight. His education was limited, having been expelled from high school when he was sixteen. He spent some time in the army, but seemingly struck an officer and was dishonourably discharged and spent a year in a military prison. He returned to Chicago in 1912 after some travel in the Midwest and began to publish some poetry. It was at this time that he met Ben Hecht who would later collaborate with him in Minna and Myself (1918), and help to found The Chicago Literary Times in 1923. He moved to New York and settled into a Bohemian existence in Greenwich Village with his first wife, Minna, in 1920. Bodenheim was a well-known womanizer, boozer and offensive person, who nevertheless possessed many literary talents. During the 1920's and 1930's, he was a prolific writer producing thirteen novels and numerous volumes of poetry. he even managed to reach the best-seller list with his novel Replenishing Jessica in 1925. His output and talents began to disappear during the Depression and by the 1940's he was an alcoholic panhandler who often carried an 'I Am Blind' sign to work on people's sympathies. he was divorced from Minna in 1938 and married Grace Finan the following year. Finan died in 1950 and Bodenheim married Ruth Fagin in 1952. Fagin shared Bodenheim's Bohemian attitude as well as his penchant for alcohol. The two were murdered by a deranged man who had befriended them and let them spend the night in his room near the Bowery. Bodenheim's other works include Advice (1920), Introducing Irony (1922), Blackguard (1923), The Sardonic Arm (1923), Crazy Man (1924), Against This Age (1925), Ninth Avenue (1926), Sixty Seconds (1929), Naked on Roller-Skates (1930), New York Madness (1933), Slow Vision (1933) and Lights in the valley (1942).
