Edward Eggleston

Born: Dec. 10, 1837 - Vevay, Indiana, USA

Died: Sep. 3, 1902 - Lake George, New York, USA

Primarily educated at home due to ill health as a child, Eggleston followed in his father's footsteps and became an ordained Methodist minister in Minnesota in 1856. In 1866, he became an editor working for a variety of periodicals over the ensuing years. In was in Hearth and Home, which he edited, that he serialized his best-remembered work, The Hoosier Schoolmaster, in 1871. He wrote a number of semi-historical works with Indiana as a backdrop and also produced many works for children and young adults. Eggleston served as president of the American Historical Association just prior to his death. His other works include The End of the World (1872), The Mystery of Metropolisville (1873), The Circuit Rider (1874), Roxy (1878), Tecumseh and the Shawnee Prophet (1878), Montezuma (1880), The Graysons (1888), The Faith Doctor (1891), The Beginning of a Nation (1896) and The Transit of Civilization From England to America (1901).
