Charles Horton Cooley

The son of Supreme Court justice Thomas M. Cooley, Charles was educated at the University of Michigan where he received a degree in engineering in 1887 He then took a master's degree in political economy. In 1890, he married Elsie Jones, daughter of a university professor, and the two had three children. Cooley began teaching sociology after he was awarded his PhD in 1894. He became an assistant professor in 1899, associate professor in 1904 and a professor in 1907. His first large work, Human Nature and the Social Order, was published in 1902. Throughout his career Cooley was considered an introvert, but possessing an exceptional mind. Today, Cooley is remembered for his theory of the 'Looking-Glass Self'; the reflection of character of the self. Cooley continued to teach at Michigan until his death from cancer in 1929. His works include The Theory of Transportation (1894), Genius, Fame and the Comparison of Races (1897), The Process of Social Change (1897), Social Consciousness (1907), Social Organization: A Study of the Larger Mind (1909), The Roots of Social Knowledge (1926), Life and the Student (1927) and Sociological Theory and Social Research (1930 Posthumous).
