Samuel Sewall

Born: Mar. 28, 1652 - Bishopstoke, Hampshire, England

Died: Jan. 1, 1730 - Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Sewall emigrated to America with his family in 1661. He was educated at Harvard University, where he received his degree in 1671. He was involved in local politics and eventually became an assistant magistrate in Massachusetts. In 1692, he was one of the judges that presided over the Salem witchcraft trials. He would later publicly apologize and call for reparations to be paid to those affected. In 1700, he published, The Selling of Joseph: A Memorial, a pamphlet calling for the abolition of slavery, thought to be the first text published on the subject of abolition. In 1717, he was appointed chief justice of Massachusetts. His other works include The Revolution in New England Justified (1691), Proposals Touching the Accomplishment of Prophecies (1713),Talitha Cumi, or Damsel Arise (1725) and The Diary of Samuel Sewall 1674-1729 (1729).
