Marie C. Stopes

a.k.a. Marie Carmichael Stopes

Author Code: EMCS

Born: Oct. 15, 1880 - Edinburgh, Scotland

Died: Oct. 2, 1958 - Norbury Park, Surrey, England

Educated at University College, London, Stopes received her degree in botany in 1901 and then did research for a time at the college before traveling to Germany to continue her studies at the University of Munich. She received her PhD in palaeobotany in 1904 and returned to England. The following year, she was awarded a DSc degree from UCL, making her the youngest in Britain to attain such an honour. After three years as lecturer in palaeobotany at Manchester University, Stopes spent a year and a half at Imperial University, Tokyo. Being very interested in politics and women's suffrage, she joined the Women's Freedom League. In 1911, she married Reginald Gates, but the marriage was subsequently annulled in 1916. In 1914, she published Man, Other Poems and a Preface, a book of verse that went largely unnoticed in spite of its obvious charm. Her book Married Life, was considered too controversial to be published during the First World War, and it wasn't until 1918 that it was finally accepted. It was an instant success, being reprinted six times in the first year - and to make it even more popular, it was banned in America. Stopes was a staunch advocate of birth control and her works often offended the various religious institutions. In 1921, she founded the Society for Constructive Birth Control and opened a clinic in London. Stopes was a life-long crusader for many causes, the most controversial being eugenics. She was a Fellow of University College, the Royal Society of Literature and the Linnean Society. Her other works include Ancient Plants (1910), Botany, the Modern Study of Plants (1910), Wise Parenthood (1918), The Constitution of Coal (1918), A Letter to Working Mothers (1919), Radiant Motherhood (1920), Love's Creation (1928), Enduring Passion (1928), Love Songs for Young Lovers (1938), We Burn (1950) and Joy and Verity (1952).
