Henry A. Beers

a.k.a. Henry Augustin Beers

Born: Jul. 2, 1847 - Buffalo, New York, USA

Died: Sep. 7, 1926 - New Haven, Connecticut, USA

Educated at Yale University, Beers graduated in 1869 and then studied law, being admitted to the New York state bar in 1870. He practiced law for a year before turning to teaching and from 1871 to 1874 earned his living as a tutor. In 1875, he joined the faculty of Yale as professor of English. In 1877, he published his first book, A Century of American Literature, 1776-1876. In 1916 he was named professor emeritus and ended his career after more than 40 years of teaching. Beers produced numerous scholarly works on English and English literature in addition to many biographies. His other works include Readings From Ruskin: Italy (1885), Nathaniel Parker Willis (1885), From Chaucer to Tennyson (1890), Initial Studies in American Letters (1891), A Suburban Pastoral, and Other Tales (1894), The Ways of Yale in the Counselship of Plancus (1895), A History of English Romanticism in the Nineteenth Century (1898), Points at Issue and Some Other Points (1903), A Short History of American Literature (1906), The Connecticut Wits, and Other Essays (1920) and Bumblebee (1925).
