William Vaughn Moody

Author Code: AWVM

Born: Jul. 8, 1869 - Spencer, Indiana, USA

Died: Oct. 17, 1910 - Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA

Orphaned as a child, Moody supported himself through odd jobs while continuing to go to school. He graduated from Harvard University in 1893 and took a master's degree the following year. While at Harvard his interest already pointed to writing and he was awarded the George B. Sohier Prize for literature. He taught English at both Harvard and Radcliffe before moving to Chicago in 1895 and joining the faculty of the University of Chicago. He published The Masque of Judgment, a verse drama, in 1900 and the work received critical acclaim. He was promoted to assistant professor of English and rhetoric at Chicago in 1901. In 1906, he published The Great Divide, which was produced at the Garrick Theatre in Chicago under the title The Sabine Woman. The play was a phenomenal success and there is no doubt that Moody would have become one of America's foremost playwrights if it wasn't for his tragic, early death. He received a doctorate from Yale in 1908 and was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His other works include Gloucester Moors and Other Poems (1901), The Fire Bringer (1904) and The Faith Healer (1909).
