Anthony Berkeley

a.k.a. Anthony Berkeley Cox, Francis Iles *, A. Monmouth Platts *

Author Code: EABC

Born: Jul. 5, 1893 - Watford, England

Died: Mar. 9, 1971 - Lodon, England

Educated at Sherbourne School and University College London, Berkeley served in the army during the First World War. He was gassed during battle and this caused life-long health problems for him. He turned to the more subdued profession of writing, initially publishing short stories and articles for Punch and other magazines. His first book, The Layton Court Mystery was published in 1925 and won critical acclaim. Over the next fifteen years, Berkeley became one of Britain's most popular crime and detective writers. His last novel appeared in 1939 and Berkeley mysteriously decided to write no more. Some of his works were made into successful screen adaptations, including Hitchcock's Suspicion in 1941, which was based on Before the Fact (1932). His other works include The Professor on Paws (1926), The Wychford Poisoning Case (1926), Cicely Disappears (1927), The Silk Stocking Murders (1928), The Poisoned Chocolates Case (1928), The Piccadilly Murder (1929), Malice Aforethought (1931), Top Storey Murder (1931), Murder in the Basement (1932), Panic Party (1934), Not to Be Taken (1937), Trial and Error (1937) and Death in the House (1939).
