Edward Young

Author Code: EEYG

Born: Jun, (?), 1681 - Upham, Hampshire, England

Died: Apr. 5, 1765 - Welwyn, Hertfordshire, England

Educated at Winchester College and New College, Oxford, Young took his Doctor of Law degree in 1719 from All Souls', Oxford. He had already begun to publish his writings as early as 1713 with An Epistle to Lord Lansdoune. In 1719, he produced his first play, Busiris, which opened at Drury Lane. Young was very successful during the 1720's and was awarded an annual pension of £200 by Walpole in 1726. He then took holy orders and became a royal chaplain in 1728. In 1731, he married Lady Elizabeth Lee, daughter of the Earl of Lichfield. Unfortunately, his wife died in 1740 and Young was distraught. In 1742, he published his masterpiece, The Complaint; or, Night Thoughts on Life, Death and Immortality, followed by further 'Nights' in 1744. The book was an enormous success and made Young famous. Later editions were illustrated by William Blake and Thomas Stoddard. After his death his works slowly lost their appeal until Edmund Blunden mentioned Night Thoughts in his war memoir Undertones of War in 1928. Young is also said to have had a strong influence on Goethe. His other works include Cynthio (1727), An Apology for Punch (1729), A Sea-Piece (1733), The Foreign Address (1734), The Centaur Not Fabulous (1755), Conjectures on Original Composition (1759) and Resignation (1762).
