John Bates Clark

Author Code: ABCL

Born: Jan. 26, 1847 - Providence, Rhode Island, USA

Died: Mar. 21, 1938 - New York City, New York, USA

Educated at Amherst College, Clark graduated in 1872 and then traveled to Europe where he studied for the next three years at the universities of Zurich and Heidelberg. During these years he was strongly influenced by German socialist theory. On his return to America, he published many articles which were subsequently collected in The Philosophy of Wealth (1886). For some unknown reason, Clark began to favour capitalism and competition publishing Capital and Earnings in 1888. He taught at many universities including Amherst and Johns Hopkins, before becoming a full professor at Columbia University in 1895. He was one of the founders of the American Economic Association, serving as its president in 1894-95. He served as editor of the Political Science Quarterly from 1895 to 1911 and was a director of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace from 1911 to his retirement in 1923. His other works include The Limits of Competition (1887), The Law of Wages and Interest (1890), The Distribution of Wealth (1899), The Problem of Monopoly (1904), Essentials of Economic Theory (1907), An Economic View of War and Arbitration (1910), Social Justice Without Socialism (1914), The Control of Trusts (1914) and A Tender of Peace (1935).
