Michael Arlen

a.k.a. Dikran Kouyoumdjian

Author Code: OMAR

Born: Nov. 16, 1895 - Rousse, Bulgaria

Died: Jun. 23, 1956 - New York City, New York, USA

Of Armenian descent, Arlen moved with his family to Lancashire, England in 1901. Educated at Malvern College and the University of Edinburgh, Arlen left school without a degree in order to pursue a career in writing. He moved to London in 1913 and began to publish essays and short stories for magazines such as The New Age. A number of these articles were collected into his first book, The London Venture, which appeared in 1920. In 1922, Arlen became a naturalized British citizen and legally changed his name. In 1924, he published The Green Hat, which was phenomenally successful and was turned into both a successful Broadway play and Hollywood film. The 1920's were a productive period in Arlen's writing with a number of successful novels and stories. In 1928, he married the Greek countess Atalanta Mercati and the couple continued to live in the south of France for a number of years. Arlen returned to England when war broke out in 1939 and served as a Civil Defense PR Officer until 1941, when for some reason his loyalty to England was questioned. He resigned and moved to America, eventually settling in New York in 1946. He never published again and died of cancer ten years later. His works include The Romantic Lady (1921), Piracy (1922), These Charming People (1923), Young Men in Love (1927), Ghost Stories (1927), Lily Christine (1929), Babes in the Wood (1930), Man's Mortality (1933), The Crooked Coronet (1937) and The Flying Dutchman (1939).
