William Hurrell Mallock

a.k.a. Newdigate Prizeman *

Born: Feb. 7, 1849 - Cheriton Bishop, Devonshire, England

Died: Apr. 2, 1923 - Wincanton, Somerset, England

Mallock was educated at Balliol College, Oxford where, in 1872, he won the Newdigate prize for his Every Man His Own Poet. After graduating in 1874, Mallock worked on his masterful satire, The New Republic, which was published in 1877 and which won critical praise. Mallock's main areas became religion and social issues, although he did produce some poetry and a few novels. He was a brilliant economist and wrote several works against Socialist theories. He was also a prolific contributor to periodicals, most notably the National Review. His other works include The Paul and Virginia (1878), Is Life Worth Living? (1879), A Romance of the Nineteenth Century (1881), Social Equality (1882), Property and Progress (1884), A Human Document (1892), Studies of Contemporary Superstition (1895), Aristocracy and Evolution (1898), Religion as a Credible Doctrine (1903), The Veil of the Temple (1904), A Critical Examination of Socialism (1908), Limits of Pure Democracy (1918) and Memoirs of Life and Literature (1920).
