Terence *

a.k.a. Publius Terentius Afer

Author Code: CPTA

Born: c. 185 BC - Carthage (?)

Died: 159 BC - Lost at Sea (?)

Born into slavery in North Africa, probably of Berber descent, Terence was sold to Terentius Lucanus, a Roman senator, who educated him and eventually gave him his freedom. Terence wrote six plays, all of which are extant and all of which are written in conversational Latin. He undoubtedly derived most of his work from those of Menander and Apollodorus. The plays were all written between 166 and 161 BC and were very popular in Rome. He is said to have left Rome in 159BC and was never seen again, presumed to have been lost at sea. His plays are Andria (166BC), Hecyra (165BC), Heauton Timorumenos (163BC), Eunuchus (161BC), Phormio (161BC) and Adelphoe (160BC). The works of Terence form the basis for Latin instruction throughout the Middle Ages and were a strong influence on later playwrights such as Moliere.
