John Taylor of Caroline

Author Code: AJTC

Born: Dec. 19, 1753 - Caroline County, Virginia, USA

Died: Aug. 21, 1824 - Hazlewood, Caroline County, Virginia, USA

Educated at the College of William and Mary, Taylor then studied law under his uncle Edmund Pendleton. During the Revolutionary War, Taylor rose to the rank of major in the Continental Army. After the war he practiced law in Virginia, served in the Virginia House of Delegates and was elected to the U.S. Senate on a number of occasions. Taylor was a plantation owner and, as such, was an adherent of slavery. His work, Construction Construed, and Constitutions Vindicated (1820), came down heavily in favor of states' rights and limiting the power of the federal government and was praised by Thomas Jefferson. It would later be of prime importance to Southerners leading up to secession. Taylor's other works include A Defense of the Measures of the Administration of Thomas Jefferson (1804), Arator (1813), An Inquiry Into the Principle and Policy of the Government of the United States (1814), Tyranny Unmasked (1822) and New Views of the United States Constitution (1823).
