Henry Kitchell Webster

Educated at Hamilton College, Webster received his bachelor's degree in 1897. He taught rhetoric for a year at Union College in New York, before returning to Chicago and beginning his writing career. He published his first novel, The Short Line War, in 1899 in collaboration with his close friend Samuel Merwin. They would also collaborate on two further novels, Calumet K (1901) and Comrade John (1907). Webster wrote numerous stories for pulp fiction magazines in addition to his novels and his single play, June Madness (1912). A number of his works were also adapted for films. In 1916, his book The Real Adventure, became a best-seller. His other works include The banker and the Bear (1900), Roger Drake, Captain of Industry (1902), The Duke of Cameron Avenue (1904), The Whispering Man (1908), The Sky Man (1910), The Painted Scene: and Other Stories of the Theater (1916), Real Life (1921), The Corbin Necklace (1926), The Clock Strikes Two (1928) and Who Is the Next? (1931).
