Cale Young Rice

Author Code: ACYR

Born: Dec. 11, 1872 - Dixon, Kentucky, USA

Died: Jan. 24, 1943 - Louisville, Kentucky, USA

Educated at Cumberland University in Kentucky and Harvard University, Rice received his master's degree in 1896. In 1898, he published his first book of poetry, From Dusk to Dusk, which received critical acclaim. In 1902, Rice married the author Alice Hegan and the two would go on to collaborate on a number of works. Never as popular as his talented wife, Rice was nevertheless devoted to her and her death in 1942 was devastating to him. The following year, Rice committed suicide. In addition to his poetry, Rice also produced a number of moderately successful plays. His works include With Omar (1900), Charles di Tocca (1903), Yolanda of Cypress (1906), At the World's Heart (1914), Trails Sunward (1917), Youth's Way (1923), Pilgrim's Scrip (1924), Seed of the Moon (1928), Swamp Bird (1931) and Bridging the Years (1939).
