Elizabeth Stoddard

a.k.a. Elizabeth Drew Stoddard, Elizabeth Drew (nee) Barstow

Author Code: AEDS

Born: May 6, 1823 - Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, USA

Died: Aug. 1, 1902 - New York City, New York, USA

Educated at the Wheaton Female Seminary in Massachusetts, Elizabeth moved to New York City and, in 1851, met her future husband, the poet Richard Stoddard. The couple established a circle of literary and artistic friends in New York and Elizabeth began contributing her poems and short stories to leading magazines such as Atlantic Monthly and Harper's Weekly. In 1854, she began writing a bi-monthly column for the Daily Alta California, a San Francisco newspaper; the column continuing until 1858. During the 1860's, Stoddard published three novels, the first and probably best of which was The Morgesons (1862). The book was well-received and achieved a good deal of critical acclaim. Stoddard's novels have had a revival in recent years, having been out of print since 1901. Her other works include Two Men (1865), Temple House (1867), Lolly Dinks' Doings (1874) and Poems (1895).
