Eugene Brieux

Author Code: FEBX

Born: Jan. 19, 1858 - Paris, France

Died: Dec. 6, 1932 - Nice, France

Interested in literature from an early age, Brieux began his career as a journalist. He edited Nouvelliste in Rouen for a number of years. In 1879, he collaborated with Gaston Salandri on Bernard Palissy, a one-act play which was published the following year. It wasn't until the production of Blanchette in 1892 that Brieux realized some real success. He then produced a series of over 30 plays during the next 30 years and established himself as one of France's most popular playwrights. Many of his plays have been translated into English and Upton Sinclair converted Brieux's Damaged Goods (Les Avaries) into a full-length novel. He was elected to the French Academy in 1910. His other works include Artists' Homes (1890), The Machine (1894), The Escape (1897), The Red Robe (1900), The Girl Friend (1902), The June Bugs (1906), Suzette (1909), False Gods (1912), Americans Among Us (1920), The Lawyer (1922), The Lavalette Family (1926) and The Regency (1929).
